Hi All

Has anyone upgraded to Windows 10. I have noticed an update button on the Windows 8.1
taskbar.

I have a machine setup on Windows 10 10130 updated ( which means the very latest ). I use it strictly for testing and have observed major improvements in the past few weeks. I have just reinstalled the preview so I would have a very clean computer, and have installed my normal programming tools successfully ( UE Studio, xHb, FWH, Harbour, and MS Visual Studio 2013 Pro plus 2015 Community ).

Most problems have to do with cosmetic issues and the new universal apps. These are being solidified and debugged now.

What you got was a prompt to perform the upgrade on the world wide release date of July 29, 2015. If you say "OK" then MSFT will start installing some software on your system in preparation, but the actual Windows 10 will install on the 29th of July. You can expect on that day for it to take about an hour to complete. It can install as an "update" so all your programs and data can remain in place.

Thereafter, all updating will be automatic, and there will be no more major releases. Everything will be service feeds. Windows 10 is free if you have WIndows 7, or 8 ( legally licensed ) on your computer. However, the free upgrade must be done within a year. There will be no ongoing charges for Win 10 no matter how long you get updates. This is because Microsoft will earn revenue from new software sales, and mostly from their new role as a service provider. Even then, most of their software will be available as very affordable subscriptions.

Its a VERY different Microsoft, and I really like the options available.

Thanks for the replies - I think I will wait for the official release and then go for it. Its funny you hear so many
complaints with Windows 8.1 but I have bee using it for ages and have never had any issues with it - so I am looking
forward to Win 10.

Everyone has their own ideas of what something should do, and those who want the "offering" to be different will sound off the loudest. I'm fine with 8.1 and so are my clients ( once I take about 3 minutes to explain it ). I really like 10, but some people are pretty vocal about it also.

I already installed the build 10130 and to me, this Windows version is not ready at all.

If Microsoft decides to release it soon, it will be a great mistake.

It responds quite slow to the Windows button, same for volume or network buttons on the taskbar.

Those buttons must respond inmediately. The Windows button sometimes does not respond at all.

Whether the OS will be ready for deployment by then is very much an open question. Every time Microsoft pushes a new build, forums fill up with legions of people reporting new bugs, the reappearance of old bugs, or continued issues with hardware and software configurations. Developers we’ve spoken to tell us that DX12 is mostly finished now (and Nvidia released their first WHQL drivers for Windows 10 in mid-May), but tamping out the bugs with every product generation will doubtless take both AMD and Nvidia some time.

If Microsoft burns the midnight oil between now and July 29, we might collectively get away with a massive Day 1 patch. If it misses and fouls something as basic as WiFi connectivity or Ethernet support (both are issues in the latest OS build), then legions of users might find themselves stranded without Internet after upgrading.

I have some hopes about it... let see how does it work....

At least on the videos and presentations that I've seen... all is alrigth.

Perhaps you need to look at your computer for issues. I have none of the problems you mention, and I'm testing on a Samsung AIO that has had its issues over the years. It is not a new computer, so I would expect problems.

I find no problem with networking ( even to 8.1 computers ), and I have no problem using remote desktop to another computer. The controls you mention are all fast on my computer and work as expected.

The only problem I am experiencing right now ( and remember this is a PREVIEW version, not a pre-release ) is with Cortana. Many of us are finding that it works sometimes and not others. We all know that sometimes a change in one part of the program affects other parts in ways we didn't expect, and I think that is the case here. All my programming tools run fine in it and there is no speed degradation.

When bugs are reported, they are usually fixed now in a couple of days and released. The main complaints were with apps and aesthetics, and most issues were opinions where people didn't like a new look and others loved it. Of course the same can be said for Windows 8.1. Some loved it, some hated it. At least with Windows 10 you can use it the way you want.

We are still waiting to see a solid Windows Phone 10 update. That has been a problem area. In some cases, Win 10 will not roll to devices on July 29. That date is for desktops, and whatever else they can assure will be stable. Phone and ( some ) tablets may be later.

I use Windows 10 on an iMac and also on a MacBook Air, that work fine with OSX and also with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

This morning Windows 10 hanged accessing the control panel and forced to reboot the computer manually.

I really would like Windows 10 to be a great success, as Microsoft really needs it. I am just reporting my findings.

OK ... but you use Bootstrap or Parallels ... and I'm not thinking that's a fair analysis. Something in those systems may not yet be addressed. I would not generalize using them to the overall performance of Win 10. As I said, on my dedicated PC that I'm using for testing, NONE of the problems you experience is an issue. You might want to fully uninstall the Win 10 from the iMacs and start with them fresh. That might make a difference.

I know it ultimately will be because many developers use Mac products for Windows work.

I use Apple bootcamp so I run Windows 10 natively.

I have been using iMacs with Windows 7, 8.0 and 8.1 for long time and had no issues. FWH has been coded on an iMac for many years

Thats why I am quite sure its not related to the hardware. I also use Windows 10 on a MacBook Air which is totally different from an iMac (hardware components) and have the same issues.

You are using 7, 8, and 8.1 as RELEASED products. However 10 is a PREVIEW and will have potential hardware issues. In some cases Microsoft has specifically said it should not be used YET on certain computers because drivers are not ready. It is very possible that the drivers necessary for your Mac products are not fully implemented for 10. Thus you would not have the same experience.
