PROBLEMS ??? installing new Windows 8 - release

Hello,

today I baught Windows 8 full version.
My old system is Vista.
Because of some messages about scripting problems I wanted to change to Windows 8.
I started the install with option include existing Progs ( Vista-installs ).
After 20 reboots the message : Not possible to install
Why ? NO idea. Free diskspace on C: 200 GB
The computer I wanted to install is a new computer with Quatro-processor and 2 Gigs memory
Now, I'm using my broken Vista, to connect to the Forum, but cannot write / read any
Emails because of the Scripting-error.
Maybe I have to format C and will loose all my installs, or select new without progs :?:

I think I can say By By to windows 8

Best Regards
Uwe :?:

Uwe,

I have been using Win 8 since the first developer release. I currently have 5 computers running under the RTM version and had no problems installing on any of them.

Yesterday I reinstalled on a fairly new laptop. I wanted to put a non-RTM license on it in case I want to sell it. I reverted the computer to the Win 7 install, did the "purchase" and download, and all went fine.

Here are some tips. First, the program checks to see what is NOT compatible, and then will uninstall those programs. I did NOT reboot after each uninstall. I just answered "Later" on those questions. Then I completed all of the uninstalls. The last option IS a Reboot, and I let it do it at that time.

The update installed fine ( but remember that Microsoft can not imagine every possible program or options that are already installed ). Then I went to the computer manufacturers website and got their updated drivers for Windows 8. In this case, its Samsung and they have a utility you install that automatically gets all the new programs and drivers for the individual computer, downloads them, and installs them. It worked fine.

I have done these installs 6 times myself, and I have several friends who are not "techies" who have already done the update.

I'd suggest you try again, and this time do not reboot after each uninstall. Also, if you have some startup scripts, disable them until after you do the update, then you can likely put them back in place.

If you think about Win 8 as a more powerful Win 7 Desktop with a whole new set of opportunities ( RT ), you will realize why some of us who have used it for awhile are very pleased.

Uwe,

My best advise is to use the cloud as much as possible.

I don't keep any important data on my computers, so I can use any computer and in some minutes I become fully productive.

Don't rely neither be dependant on local stored data, so do a backup, format and say bye to Windows Vista :-)

Antonio, Tim

thank You very much for the response
My 2. test, with same result using option 2 ( keep only personal data )
Tim :I cannot stop autoreboot,
It seems, Windows 8 trys to collect existing installs inside a INI-file
A DOS-box opens with the message ( I try to translate )

The file WINPESHL.ini exists but nothing to start.
( of course, nothing is selected )
Possible format or the name of the exe is wrong.

[LaunchApp]
AppPath=\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\upglayer.exe /params:"\$WINDOWS.~BT\upglayer.ini"

Maybe still testing option 3 without keeping existing progs will install new but with
still existing Vista on a extra partition ( only used to work until finished transfering ) :?:

It seems, existing progs cannot be used and must be reinstalled
that is not what Microsoft promised : keeping data from Vista and Windows 7.

Best Regards
Uwe :?:

To All

So far we have found Windows 8 to be compatible with all the FWH programs as well as with ADO.

And what about your existing software? Can you move it to cloud too?

I'm just creating a complete System-image, because I'm very unsurely
to loose everything. After formating C, I will try to install again.
If there are any problems, I can restore my old system.
I didn't believe, that there would be so many problems.
Sounded very good, reading newspapers.

Uwe,

Before I migrate everything to Windows 8, I made an image of my Windows 7, so I can mount this image on a portable hard drive or VM, fortunately never needed to use the old Win7... and also not met the GPF screen of Windows 8 after all this time to use.
If your problem is only the emails, had a technique to copy the folder user\appdata\local and restore once installed.

After you solve the problems these articles are very useful:

keyboard shortcuts for those who do not have touch screen, and gestures for those who have

Behind Windows 8, what's beyond the lack of start menu (3 pages): http://arstechnica.com/information-tech ... windows-8/

Hello,
now I reached the Point, my Internet works.
after formatting C: there was no Problem, to install Windows.
For me ( personally ) it looks a little bit like a toybox,
but maybe because the usage is complete different to other versions.
Now the real work starts, to install all needed Tools again.

Best Regards

Uwe,

OK ... Vista issues do not surprise me ! You may have some old routine in there that was creating a problem. Normally the installs are very simple and painless.

With all old versions of Windows, about once a year I did a full format and reinstall ... it always cleaned up everything ... so that would not be an issue for me.

Now, here are some of my thoughts on using WIn 8:

1) Remember the Desktop. You have it ! If you want a start button, look at Start8 from StarDock.com . It is $5 US, and gives you a true Win 7 start button ( complete ) on the Desktop. You will likely use the desktop most of your day ... but it should be faster and cleaner.

2) Consider the RT Start screen as a "bonus". There are many fun apps and a whole lot more coming. You do not have to use this section now, but you may find some benefits.

3) Consider a Dual Monitor. I have dual monitors and its very simple. Just go into the Setup and Extend the current desktop.

4) Use Search. It is one of the Charms. Search is global, or specific to an app. If you are in an RT app, don't look on the screen for a search box. That's wasted space. The Windows key and the letter C brings up the Charms menu

5) Do not put all your apps on the Start menu. Only put the ones you want up there. Use the All Apps option to display the rest when you want them.

So you have to reinstall and reconfigure all your software and tools! :-(

Or do you have a trick that avoids such a pain?

Noberto,

thank You very much for the Info.
During install, I saw only 3 options and NO option keeping files.
After finishing all new installs, I would like so save the
complete start-partition ( Drive C ) because of the hard Install-work.
Before, I could use PARAGON-Driveimage.
I think until now, there is no Appl, to save Windows 8 as a Image ?
The same with NO working external Firewall ? ( not compatible )
