I also have a Synology DS218 that I use for the backups. I see that this can also be used as server ?

Is that a option to work with or just keep the DS218 as backup media ?

Excluding some or more options )))

I have several clients that use a Synology NAS as server.
I have to say that then all are converted to SQL. On a Synology NAS you van install the MariaDB package, and it work very nice with FW :D

You can also use it with CDX, but that is slower than SQL

But with the NAS, they are using it as a Peer to Peer system I suppose? Not the way like the server solution of Otto ?

Do you mean not with Remote Desktop (Terminal Server)? Indeed, but if you use it with SQL it's very fast :D
On some Synology NAS, like mine, you can also run VMWare. So you can install an Virtual Microsoft server. But a normal PC will be faster.
I don't use my NAS as VMWare server. I have a seperate ESXi-server, running several VMWare's.

Hello Marc,
Just as a test, we virtualized WINDOWS on a Synology and tested it with RDP.
But the performance is not adequate.
I think then you would need a model of the 3600 series.
Best regards,
Otto

Thanks.. I will use the Nas for backups and a new Laptop/Desktop system when I start with RDP.

Marc Vanzegbroeck, may I ask what SQL could bring for such small applications as ours.
I think the lack of the dBase Editor (DBU) alone cannot be substituted.
By the time phpMyAdmin starts, I already have done all the work with DBU.

I am convinced that RDP, DBF and the other formats (xml, doc, xls, jpg, etc. ) and the inclusion of the filesystem of the operating system enable so much that it does not make sense to include an additional layer.

Best regards,
Otto

Otto,

I don't think that sql users are using phpmyadmin a lot now a days.

There is free software like Heidisql that is a great DBU system for SQL.

I did not see any prices for them, but will look them up today.

Otto, what do you think ? 2016 or 2019. As far as I see 2016 will be stopped updating end this year.

Marc,

I would only buy 2019.
Then you are on the pulse of the time.
It's not about customer systems, it's about you.

Otto

Marc,

I have used HEIDISQL before I used phpmyAdmin.

Mr. Rao then worked on a phpmyAdmin clone based on xBrowse. But there was practically no interest and the project is asleep.
This clone would be a killer app.

But there is nothing better than direct access via dbf.
I'm talking about programs like you and I do.
If you work for a corporation or for foreign bosses, it's a little different.

Best regards,
Otto
