At the keynote, Jobs announced that they were dropping the word 'Computer' from the name, reinforcing this.
The company that is now just Apple Inc. has a history of getting in to the market early, and then losing market share later on. Back when IBM was still selling only mainframes and minicomputers, Apple owned a huge chunk of the home computer market with the Apple II. In 1984, it released the Mac. While not the first computer with a GUI, it was the first that the general public could afford. After he left Apple, Steve Jobs' other company, NeXT, produced the first rapid application development environment.
The next challenge for the computing industry is going to be adapting to the post-desktop era. The recent keynote shows that Apple seems to be aware of this.
