I found a registry key at HKLM\Software\Clients\Mail that contains the list of selections on the IE properties programs tab for the default mail client. The main key has a "Default" value which contains the user's selection and points to a subkey by the same name.

You only have to refresh the Explorer.

Now the bad news: the FiveWin class treg32 seems not to be able writing REG_BINARY key values.
You can only write subkey values with type REG_DWORD and REG_SZ.

... the update. I've tested it on an Intermec 700 and used VidyaRegistry editor to check results:
Reading values and Creating keys is now OK. However, regsetvalue correctly creates the required subkey but writes the type 'REG_SZ' instead of the intended text contents... Nearly there hth
